Advantage is Flying High
Wednesday, 30th September, 2009
Graham Smith is the owner of a leading pest control company at the forefront of technology. Having worked in agriculture for over 20 years, 15 as a manager, he has a wealth of knowledge and experience in this field, recognising the many problems that farmers face.
Recently at a corporate event he was approached by a land owner who believed, having watched model aircraft flying near his farm, they had huge potential to scare off pigeons from his 40ha of winter peas. All else had failed, he was told, they had already tried bangers, rockets, shotguns, screaming, shouting and pulling out of hair, could Graham help?
Graham “flew” at the opportunity as he flies model aircraft himself. One afternoon last week, armed with his 62inch scale P51 D Mustang, Graham met the landowner not far from Chelmsford and was shown the field.
Very quickly the model was put together and the engine fired into action, a quick radio check and with everything working as expected, she was pointed into wind, and after a short take off, away she went in search of the offending pests.
It didn’t take long to see some results, a huge grey cloud of pigeons took off, closely followed by the Mustang (aptly named ‘Shoo, Shoo, Baby) over Essex, scaring the many pigeons currently feeding on the crop. The aim is to keep the birds moving says Graham. It was a resounding success.
